News Big Thank You to Johnsons for Supporting Young Carers Heading to Secondary School Each year we try to find ways to support young carers as they make the transition from primary to secondary school. A simple but important part of this is providing a pack of useful stationary. In young carers’ families, one or both parents are often unable to work. Changing schools is already expensive, with families having to buy new uniforms, sports kits, shoes and trainers. A simple pack of stationary is one less thing for families to have to consider buying and enables young carers to start with some of the things they need in their first year. This year we’re extremely proud to thank Johnsons Workwear on Team Valley for their support. They’ve provided packs of pens, pencils, rulers, pencil sharpeners and erasers for our young carers. Johnsons Workwear chose to support Young Carers because we understand the importance of the often difficult transition between primary & secondary school and how this could affect the young carers. By providing a simple stationary pack we hope that this is one less thing they have to think about during this potentially unsettling, but exciting period. Nicola Rutherford - Secretary to the General ManagerJohnsons Workwear The move from primary to secondary school can be a difficult time, particularly for those who have the added responsibility of caring for a family member. Young carers have to be so much more organised. They might be responsible for their uniform, packed lunch and school equipment as a parent might not always be able to do this for them. They might also be worried about the longer day at school, as more time spent travelling could mean extra time away from the person that they care for. Some young carers find it difficult to get the school equipment that they need. We send packs to our young carers which include activities to help them plan and prepare. We include a small stationery pack, including items such as pens, pencils, rulers, erasers and notepads to make sure that they have the essentials they will need. This helps to relieve some of the pressure that they’re feeling, lets them know that we are thinking of them and is a reminder that we’re here if they need support. Andrea Overton.
